Start with one shared specification
Give each fitter the same room information and the same intended changes. Identify whether the bath, toilet and basin stay in their current positions. If one quote includes moving plumbing and another assumes a like-for-like replacement, the totals are not directly comparable. Record any alternative option separately.
Name the actual products
A description such as “shower included” leaves room for misunderstanding. Look for the shower type, tray or floor system, screen, controls and relevant accessories. Do the same for the vanity, taps and wall finish. If you plan to supply products yourself, establish who checks compatibility and who handles damaged or missing items.

Look behind the visible finish
Removal, waste handling, surface repair, waterproofing and ventilation may be less exciting than the suite, but they affect the work. Ask what preparation is included and what cannot be confirmed until old fittings are removed. A reasonable explanation of uncertainty is more useful than assuming every hidden condition is covered.
Record exclusions and changes
Ask the fitter to identify work outside the quotation, how additional work is priced and how your agreement is recorded. Clarify whether decoration, lighting, flooring beyond the bathroom or moving stored items is included. Check payment stages and avoid treating a verbal conversation as the final specification.
Compare the handover as well as the start
Discuss the checks to be completed, product care information and the route for reporting a concern. Keep product warranties separate from any workmanship terms and ask for the actual wording. A quotation should make the responsibilities after fitting as clear as those during installation.
